EIT Health supports promising innovations in the European health care sector. The faster a good idea can get to the market, the better it is for European citizens and their health. In applying for the subsidy, i-Med Technology benefited from support from the subsidy specialists at Trias and the Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus. Currently comprised of four members, the i-Med Technology team was pleasantly surprised by the award of the EIT Health European innovation subsidy.

Trias is een dynamisch bureau dat heel alert inspeelt op onze wensen. We merkten dat ze goed inzicht hebben in wat we doen, dat er snel wordt geschakeld en dat ze heel actief meedenken.” Belangrijk was het opzetten van een roadmap waarin werd aangegeven welke subsidieaanvragen zinvol en koppelbaar zijn. Op die manier kon elke aanvraag zo effectief mogelijk worden opgesteld. Dat leidde onder meer tot het aanvragen en succesvol binnenhalen van drie subsidies: Crosscare, dat financiële ondersteuning biedt tussen de € 15.000 en € 50.000 bij de ontwikkeling van zorginnovaties, een MIT R&D-subsidie en een ATTRACT (EU-Horyzon 2020) voor nieuwe innovatieve ontwikkelingen in beeldtechnologie.

Voor i-Med uit Maastricht was 2019 het jaar van de doorbraak. 2020 moet het jaar van het eerste succes worden. Vincent Graham en Jaap Heukelom denken met hun innovatieve, digitale hoofdloep de wereld van de chirurgie te kunnen revolutioneren. Een digitale kijk op gezondheid. De unieke loep van i-Med biedt de medische wereld ongekende mogelijkheden. Aan het hoge resolutie display, waar de chirurg doorheen kijkt, kunnen op afroep beelden worden toegevoegd. Zoals 3D CT- of MRI-scans. Zo is voor een geneesheer in letterlijk één oogopslag alle relevante informatie beschikbaar, om een operatie efficiënt en veilig te laten verlopen.

Samen met 26 andere genomineerden strijdt zij voor een plek in de toptien van de meest baanbrekende Innovaties van de wetenschap in Nederland.

Based at the Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus, i-Med Technology is working on a 3D digital surgical loupe that is seen by the target group of surgeons as an unusually practical tool for their daily work in the operating room. They also see interesting additional opportunities within their own field of specialization. Thanks to a European ATTRACT grant (Horizon 2020), one of these potential customized applications is now gaining momentum: this innovation makes critical tissues such as nerves and lymphatic vessels visible with infrared cameras in order to reduce the risk of damage during surgery.

Start-up of the day: lichtgewicht hoofdloep voor chirurgen
Met de digitale lichtgewicht hoofdloep van I-Med Techology kunnen chirurgen tijdens een ingreep pre-operatieve informatie, zoals mri-scans of snijbanen, in 3D-beeld oproepen. Zo hoeven ze de operatie niet te onderbreken. De beelden van de loep kunnen worden gestreamd zodat collega’s in de OK of op afstand mee kan kijken. Jaap Heukelom en Vincent Graham ontwikkelen de digitale loep in samenwerking met artsen en andere partners. Heukelom: “Het is geweldig om van artsen te horen hoe erg ze staan te springen om dit soort oplossingen.”

The “Happy Aging on tour” event took place this time at the HeathHouse in Leuven. The group of about 40 visitors from the Happy-Aging network organisation in Flanders Belgium did have a guided tour about the future of health through the very futuristic HealthHouse and listened to 3 pitches of 3 Innovative companies.
“It became clear that the “Corpus” room showing digital anatomy case and scans, fit seamlessly to the Digital Loupe of i-Med with additional picture in picture 3D scan information”

In wave 4 van CrossCare is het project Digital Surgical Loupe van de Limburgse start up i-Med technology geselecteerd. EIZT en Happy Aging gaan de ondernemers ondersteunen bij de doorontwikkeling van de Digital 3D Loupe.

From its base at the Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus, i-Med Technology is developing a unique, lightweight digital surgical loupe weighing less than 250 grams. The digital surgical loupe is equipped with powerful LED lighting and excellent FHD 3D image quality. Surgeons can use this device to call up pre-operative diagnostic information among other things, data which then appears in the user’s field of vision. This digital loupe then creates 3D recordings of everything the surgeon sees through the loupe. This total package makes the i-Med product extremely interesting for almost every surgeon.
